What the question looks like
Verbal classification questions are found in the Verbal Skills section, the first section on the HSPT. You have 60 questions to answer in 16 minutes, so each one gets a quick look.
The question shows four words and asks you to spot the one that does not fit with the others. The wording is:
"Which word does not belong with the others?"
Four choices follow, A through D. Three of the words share something in common. That shared thing might be a category, such as three kinds of tools, or a feature, such as three words that describe size. The fourth word breaks the pattern. That fourth word is your answer.
Notice that this question type is the reverse of most vocabulary questions. You are not looking for the word that matches. You are looking for the one that does not.
Several verbal classification questions typically appear together in a block within the section.
How to solve it
- Read all four words before deciding anything. Snap judgments are dangerous here because the first two words you read might not be part of the true group.
- Find a category that fits three of the words. Say it in your head as a short label: "types of fruit," "words that mean fast," "things with wings."
- Check that the fourth word truly does not fit. If it could fit your category, your category is too broad. Try a more specific one.
- Watch the part of speech. Sometimes three words are nouns and one is a verb, or three are adjectives and one is a noun. That alone can be the pattern.
- Mark the outlier and move on. If you cannot find a clean group of three, go with the word that feels most different and keep going.
Worked examples
Example 1
Which word does not belong with the others?
- A.rose
- B.oak
- C.maple
- D.pine

Answer: A: rose
Oak, maple, and pine are all types of trees, so rose is the word that does not belong because it is a flower. Some students hesitate because all four are plants, but the question asks for the tightest group of three, and three of these are specifically trees. Once you label the category as trees rather than plants, rose stands out.
Example 2
Which word does not belong with the others?
- A.whisper
- B.shout
- C.murmur
- D.mumble

Answer: B: shout
Whisper, murmur, and mumble all describe speaking quietly, so shout is the outlier because it means speaking loudly. Mumble tempts some students because it suggests unclear speech rather than soft speech, but volume is the feature that links three words. All four are ways of speaking, which is the too-broad category to avoid.
Example 3
Which word does not belong with the others?
- A.iron
- B.copper
- C.wood
- D.gold

Answer: C: wood
Iron, copper, and gold are all metals, so wood is the word that does not belong. All four are materials, which is why the broad label does not help; the narrower group of three is metals. Gold tempts some students because it is also a color, but it is a metal first and fits the group.
Example 4
Which word does not belong with the others?
- A.tiny
- B.small
- C.minute
- D.huge

Answer: D: huge
Tiny, small, and minute all describe something very small, so huge does not belong. This is the pattern where the outlier is the opposite of the group. Minute trips some students because they read it as a unit of time, but in this list it is the adjective meaning extremely small, and it stays in the group.
Traps to watch for
- Categories that are too broad. If all four words fit your label, your label is not the one the test intends. Narrow it down until exactly one word falls out.
- The outlier that is an opposite. Often three words share a meaning and the fourth means the reverse. Do not assume the odd word must be from a different topic entirely.
- Deciding after two words. Reading "oak, maple" and thinking "trees" is fine, but you still have to read the other two before you know which one breaks the pattern.
- Unknown vocabulary. If you do not know one word, group the three you do know. If they clearly fit together, the unknown word is probably the answer. If they do not, the unknown word is probably in the group.
Pacing
You have around 16 seconds per question in the Verbal Skills section, and verbal classification questions should fit within that once you get used to naming the category first. If you cannot find a group of three after one careful pass, pick the word that seems most different and move on. There is no guessing penalty on the HSPT, so always fill in an answer.
